Duplicate rows can be a problem with Excel. Here is a quick and easy tip about how to find and delete duplicate rows in MS Excel 2003.

The first step is to highlight the rows and columns in Excel that contains your data.



Then, you need to go the Data menu on the Excel command bar. Select Filter and then Advance Filter. 

When you select the Advanced Filter item on the Excel menu, you will receive a dialogue box for the Advanced Filter options. You should select Copy to another location and then select the top row of where you want the new list to be placed. I typically select the first row in the Excel spreadsheet that is directly beside of my existing list. Make sure that you click the Unique records only box and then click OK.

The list of items (less the duplicates) will appear in the Excel spreadsheet begining at the location that you selected. You can delete the old data and begin using the new list.

Can we talk?

The concept of the Internet is really pretty simple.  The Internet is a world wide network of computers that can talk to each other.  This is very similar to when people want to talk with each other.   If I want to talk to you, and we are in different parts of the world, I would call you on your telephone.  That would allow me to talk with you regardless of your location.

 

The Internet is the phone system for computers that allows them to talk to each other.  For the computers on the Internet to talk to each other, they have to speak the same language - just like when two people talk to each other. The language that the Internet computers speak is called TCP/IP (see What is TCP/IP for an explanation of the language).

The computers also have to know how to contact each other over long distances.  To find other computers on the Internet, the computers use an IP address (see What is an IP address for more details on this item).  An IP address is similar to a person's telephone number.  If a computer wants to talk to another computer that is in a different part of the world, it calls that computer's IP address.

You can control whether your Facebook information is being added to search engines by setting your Public Search settings on Facebook.  To see what your Facebook Public Search settings are currently set to, go to Privacy Preferences on the Facebook Account menu.



Then select Edit Your Settings at the bottom of the Facebook Privacy Preferences page under Apps and Websites.  This is the location that Facebook stores all of your information about how external applications and website access your Facebook profile information.



You can get to all of your Facebook Apps and Websites settings from this page, but the one that we are interested in today is the Public Search setting that is located at the bottom of the page.



When you go to the Facebook page for Public Search, make sure that the Public Search box is NOT checked.  If you check the box, then your Facebook profile information will be available for any search engine on the web.



You may want to go to your Facebook account now and check your Public Search settings.

It's very important to make sure that your Facebook privacy settings are setup correctly.  I've seen too many of my friends not pay attention to their online privacy settings for Facebook.  It can be a serious issue if your online privacy settings aren't setup correctly.

Check Your Facebook Privacy Settings

The first thing that you should do is to see what your Facebook privacy settings are currently set at.  You can do this by going to the Account menu in the upper right corner of the screen.  When you hover over the Account item, you will see a drop down list similar to the list below.

Update Your Facebook Privacy Preferences

Select the Privacy Preferences item on the Facebook menu, and you should see a screen similar to the screen below. 



You can use this screen to quickly see how you are sharing information on Facebook.  You should probably go ahead and take a look at your settings now just to see how they are setup.

What is a Strong Password?

A strong password is a password that is difficult for someone to guess or for a password cracking tool to be able to discover.  Most password cracking tools use some common tricks to try and break into accounts.  Having a strong password is one of the most important things you can do to protect your information.

One of the best methods for doing this is to use some type of acronym for your password.  Don't use common words.  Most password cracking programs use a database of common words and common phrases to try and hack passwords.  By using an acronym, you are making it difficult for the hackers to break in.

How to Create Strong Passwords

Most people use common words and phrases because they are easy to remember.  For example, you may use your dog's name (Spike) for a password.  Remembering a name is much easier than remembering something like Il2tmdS2tp.  However, if you realize that Il2tmdS2tp is an acronym for "I love to take my dog Spike to the park" then it becomes very easy to remember and very difficult to hack.

When you create your acronym password, try to use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters and add some numbers or special characters also.  I usually start my acronym sentence with a capital letter and use capital letters for proper names (such as Spike).  I also usually substitute the word "to" with the number 2 and the word "for" with the number 4. 

If it's something that I feel strongly about, I will end the acronym sentence with an exclamation point.  For example, Il2polg! is I love to play on-line games!  Something that I feel very strongly about.  You can also end your sentence with a question mark.

I hope this helps you create some strong passwords that are easy to remember.

Remember, it only takes a minute to post something on the internet; however, once it's out there, you can't take it back.  Information moves faster today than it ever has before.  Something that kids have to deal with today is that almost everyone has a cell phone (with a camera) and easy access to the internet.

I recently had a friend who took some pictures with her phone of some of her friends.  Without thinking about it, she posted the photos online.  The photos included a couple of her friends kissing.  She didn't think this was a big deal, but one of the kids got pretty upset (and I don't blame her).

Before you knew it, everyone was talking about the photos.  It became a really big deal.  Without even intending to, my friend became an accidental cyberbully.  She took the photos down as soon as she realized it was a problem, but by that time the damage had already been done.

Be sure to think before you post.  What you may think is OK may upset other people.  It's better to be safe than sorry.

What is cyberbullying?

Well it's any type of bullying that occurs using the internet, e-mail or texting.  I have a friend who was recently the victim of cyberbullying.  He started receiving anonymous text messages on his phone harassing him.  The text messages were sent using an online texting service, so he wasn't able to know who was really sending the messages.

How to deal with cyberbullying

So what did my friend do when he started receiving the messages?  The first thing he did was tell his parents.  Whenever you receive a text message, an e-mail, an IM, or anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, you should let your parents know.  The other thing he did was to just ignore the messages.  His first reaction was to respond to the messages, but that's just what the cyberbullies want you to do.

If you reply to the text messages, you play right into their hands.  You show them that they can get a reaction out of you.  If you just ignore the messages, then the cyberbullies get frustrated.  They don't know if you actually received the messages or what happened.

Don't reply to cyberbullies.  It's one of the best ways to deal with them.  Also, remember to tell your parents about what happened.

Have you checked on the Internet to see what information is out there about you?  If not, you should probably check.  One of the best places to check is Google.  There are a few tips and tricks to performing Google searches.  Here are a few things to consider:

When you search for information online about yourself, you will want to use quotation marks to make sure that the search engine looks for your complete name.  For example, if I search for John Doe without quotation marks, Google will treat this like two separate words.  It will search for information that contains the word John and the word Doe.  It won't matter if they are used together or are even close together.

If I use quotation marks and search for "John Doe", then Google will look for the name John Doe together.  So when you search for yourself online, be sure to use quotation marks around your name.  You should also look for different variations of your name such as "Jonathan Doe" or "John P. Doe".

Go ahead and Google yourself and see what information you find.  You may be surprised.
